The Alma was born in the 1930s from the pen of Gaston-Louis Vuitton, initially under the name Squire Bag before being renamed after the Pont de l'Alma. Its silhouette has remained virtually unchanged: a rounded dome set on a flat base, a zip that follows the curve from the top to the ends, and two short handles for carrying by hand. It is an piece of architecture more than just a bag.
This piece dates from 1998 and bears the date code BA****. It features the natural cowhide leather characteristic of Monogram pieces from that period—untreated originally, it darkens and develops character over the years. Here, the patina is honey-colored, warm, and uniform across the handles, the pointed trim, and the entire base band. It is precisely this shade that cannot be achieved on a new bag.
The PM size is the most balanced in the line: 30 cm wide by 16.5 cm deep, leaving a genuinely usable volume. The interior effortlessly accommodates an iPad, diary, continental wallet, cosmetic pouch, AirPods, and a phone. The rigid base allows the bag to stand upright on the floor or a chair without collapsing. The original padlock and keys accompany the piece.
Good overall condition, grade B — the coated canvas is clean, the cowhide leather features a lovely uniform patina. The corners are in good condition with very slight rubbing, the bottom is clean with light signs of prior use. The brass hardware is in good condition with a light patina, the zip is functional, and the interior is in good condition. No major defects to report — see photos.
